South East in Bloom 2009

At only the second attempt Ash Parish Council have been awarded a (High) Silver Certificate in the Urban Community section in the Southern Water sponsored, South and South East in Bloom 2009.

South East in Bloom promotes, supports and encourages gardening, horticulture and environmental sustainability across Kent, Surrey, East and West Sussex, Hampshire, Isle of Wight and parts of Dorset and Wiltshire. As such, it is one of 17 regional campaigns which make up Britain in Bloom - europes largest horticultural campaign.

The South and South East in Bloom judges provided the following overall feedback; "The enthusiasm of the team and delivery of a thorough presentation prepared the judges for a tour which encompassed all aspects of an In Bloom entry." and "Ash Parish Council have worked very hard to involve all sectors of the community and are making good progress through the early stages of becoming established entrants."

The judges also commented on the following areas of achievement:

"Tiltham's petrol station was very bright and eye-catching";
"Budgen's should be congratulated for encouraging people to have a go at floral displays";
"The wide use of recycled composted materials";
"Great improvement on accessibility to Ash Meadows";
"The Sand and Ice Garden (at Walsh School) is good for conveying the global climate problem to children";
"Good participation of community in wider range of activities, but not necessarily directly linked to In Bloom" and "Impressive range of sponsorship being achieved".

Mark Collins, head groundsman, and Graham Bidwell, administrator received the award on behalf of Ash Parish Council, at an "Oscar Style" presentation attended by around 400 fellow "In Bloomers", at the Grand Hotel, Brighton on 2nd September 2009. The certificate was presented by Blue Peter gardener Chris Collins.

The Ash Parish judging took place on 9th July with a circular route encompassing, The Ash Centre, Winchester Road, Ash Meadows, Shawfields Day Centre, Ash Walsh and Ash Grange Schools, and Coronation Gardens.
